Piccolo Buco – When Pizza Isn’t Just Red

Just a few minutes from the Trevi Fountain lies a place where pizza becomes something truly memorable. If you’re planning to explore Rome’s historic centre, my recommendation is simple: enjoy a walk around Piazza Navona, wander through the charming streets, and finish your day with one of the best Neapolitan pizzas in the city.

Whenever we travel, we try to discover places that locals genuinely love rather than restaurants that are famous only because of social media.

Piccolo Buco is exactly one of those places.

From the outside, it looks like a small neighbourhood pizzeria with only a handful of tables and often a queue stretching outside.

After your first visit, you’ll quickly understand why.

It’s not just about pizza.

It’s about the whole experience.

Pizza Doesn’t Have to Be Red

Most people imagine pizza with a traditional tomato base.

Piccolo Buco introduces something many visitors have never even heard of.

Their pizzas are organised by the colour of the base sauce.

You’ll find:

❤️ Red Pizza – traditional tomato sauce

🤍 White Pizza – no tomato sauce

💛 Yellow Pizza – yellow tomato sauce

🩷 Pink Pizza – delicate creamy pink base

💚 Green Pizza – basil and herb combinations

It may sound like a small detail.

In reality, each colour creates a completely different flavour profile.

Burrata Takes Centre Stage

One of our absolute favourites was the pizza topped with a whole fresh burrata.

The moment you cut into it, the creamy centre slowly melts into the pizza, mixing with extra virgin olive oil, tomatoes and fresh basil.

It isn’t just visually impressive.

It genuinely elevates every bite.

What Makes It Special?

Of course, the first thing you’ll notice is the authentic Neapolitan dough.

Soft.

Light.

Airy.

Beautifully blistered around the edges.

But the real magic lies in the simplicity and the quality of the ingredients.

Sometimes the best dishes don’t need complicated recipes.

They only need exceptional products.

It’s one of those places that’s absolutely worth waiting for.

And perhaps it’s where you’ll discover that pizza doesn’t always have to be red.
