Basler Läckerli Swiss honey spice cookies served in a small ceramic bowl with almonds and candied orange peel

Traditional Basler Läckerli Recipe (Swiss Honey Spice Cookies)

Basler Läckerli is a traditional Swiss honey spice cookie from the city of Basel.
Originally a Christmas specialty, it is now enjoyed throughout the year and remains one of Switzerland’s most iconic baked treats.

This Basler Läckerli recipe brings together honey, almonds, candied citrus peel, and warm spices into a dense, aromatic dough that improves with time.

Honey.
Almonds.
Orange peel.
Cinnamon.

Firm.
Fragrant.
Timeless.

That is how Basel tastes.

Why This Basler Läckerli Recipe Works

This recipe is built on concentration of flavor.

Honey provides structure and natural sweetness.
Almonds add depth and texture.
Candied citrus peel brings brightness.
Warm spices create complexity and warmth.

Unlike soft cookies, Basler Läckerli is firm and compact.
It matures over a few days, developing a deeper, more balanced flavor.

It is not delicate.
It is not modern.
It is traditional.

Ingredients (Makes about 30 pieces)

Classic Basler Läckerli

250 g high-quality honey
200 g granulated sugar
60 g butter
350 g all-purpose flour
150 g almonds (ground or roughly chopped)
80 g candied orange peel
40 g candied lemon peel
1 tsp cinnamon
¼ tsp ground cloves
Pinch of nutmeg
1 tbsp kirsch (optional)
1 tsp baking powder
Pinch of salt

For the Glaze

150 g powdered sugar
2–3 tbsp lemon juice or water

Instructions

1. Prepare the Honey Base

Gently heat the honey, sugar, and butter in a saucepan.

Do not boil.
Simply warm until combined.

Let the mixture cool slightly.

2. Combine Dry Ingredients

In a bowl, mix:

Flour
Almonds
Spices
Salt
Baking powder
Candied citrus peel

Add the warm honey mixture and kirsch (if using).

Mix into a thick, sticky dough.

3. Rest the Dough

Wrap and let the dough rest for at least 2 hours.
Ideally overnight.

This step deepens the flavor and improves texture.

4. Bake

Roll the dough to about 1 cm thickness.

Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 15–20 minutes until lightly golden.

While still warm, brush with glaze.

Let set, then cut into small rectangles.
