MEDZI | MÚRMI, Trnava

Sometimes it pays to look beyond the walls. And see what is between them.

Not every good restaurant visit begins with hunger.

After dinner, my wife and I were wandering along Halenárska Street in Trnava. We had already heard quite a bit about MEDZI | MÚRMI, so this time curiosity won.

We’ll just have a look.

Of course, it didn’t end with looking.

HALENÁRSKA STREET

The location fits the restaurant’s name almost perfectly.

Halenárska is one of Trnava’s historic streets, part of the old fabric of a city famous for its churches, towers and medieval walls.

At night, it takes on a completely different character.

Cobblestones, old houses, street lamps and the quiet of the historic centre create a setting that needs very little embellishment.

BETWEEN THE WALLS

Step inside and historic Trnava does not disappear.

White tablecloths, deep green velvet, crystal chandeliers, decorative wallpaper and an old cast-iron stove create an interior reminiscent of an elegant Central European salon from another century.

The kitchen, however, clearly lives in the present.

And the stove?

It looked as though it had already seen a few things.

Probably more than we have. 🙂

The restaurant has room for only around 30 guests, which helps explain its intimate atmosphere and personal style of service. MEDZI | MÚRMI describes its cuisine as modern European gastronomy based on seasonal ingredients, with a menu that changes throughout the year.

And the service was one of the first things we noticed.

The lady looking after our table could describe every dish, ingredient and combination with such confidence that, for a moment, it felt as though she had cooked everything herself.

Exactly the kind of service that doesn’t simply sell you a dish.

It knows how to tell you about it.

SHRIMPS · WASABI · STEAM

Considering we had already eaten dinner, ordering something small seemed perfectly reasonable.

Obviously.

Bao with shrimps. 🙂

On the menu, the dish appears as Shrimps in Bao Bun – shrimps, avocado, mint, sesame and a soft steamed bao bun.

And this was the moment when our “we’ll just have a look” suddenly made perfect sense.

Soft steamed bao, shrimps, creamy avocado, wasabi, fresh mint and sesame.

The Asian influence was unmistakable without becoming overpowering. The dish remained fresh, creamy and beautifully balanced.

A gentle touch of Asia without having to shout that it is Asian.

AND A GLASS OF SLOVAKIA

With the bao, I chose a glass of Sauvignon from Predium Winery in Vráble, Slovakia, one of the white wines available by the glass.

I was happy with the choice.

Sauvignon, with its fresh green character and the nettle-like notes I personally enjoy, gave the dish a pleasant lift.

Would I try something different next time?

Probably.

With the mint, avocado, wasabi and delicate sweetness of the shrimps, I would be curious to explore something slightly more aromatic – perhaps Gewürztraminer, Devín or Muscat.

Interestingly, the wine list already includes a Slovak Devín from Vinkor Winery, so the experiment is waiting for another visit.

A BROWNIE WITH A LITTLE THEATRE

My wife went in the sweeter direction.

The homemade chocolate brownie comes with raspberry and pistachio cream.

But the dessert arrived with something extra.

It was presented with a dramatic smoky effect, slowly spilling from beneath the serving dish while the brownie was being eaten.

A little piece of theatre at the table.

A nice detail.

More importantly, one you remember.

NOT EVERYTHING HAS TO CONTAIN ALCOHOL

The non-alcoholic side of the menu deserves some attention too.

Alongside house lemonades such as passion fruit & mandarin, lychee & grapefruit, or raspberry & thyme, there is a small selection of alcohol-free mixed drinks including Nogrony, Bitter Highball and Ruby Spritz.
A small detail, perhaps.

But a good one.

Going alcohol-free here does not have to mean sparkling water with lemon.

TIP

MEDZI | MÚRMI is not the kind of restaurant where I would expect – or want – an enormous menu.

And that is a good thing.

The current selection moves from beef tenderloin and slow-cooked broth to tuna with pak choi, shrimp tagliatelle, zucchini with egg and dill, and local cheese in panko.

With space for only around 30 guests, making a reservation is a sensible idea, particularly for a weekend visit. The restaurant itself recommends booking if you want to be certain of a table.

You will find MEDZI MÚRMI Restaurant Trnava at Halenárska 418/13 in the historic centre of Trnava, around a five-minute walk from Trojičné Square.

MEDZI MÚRMI

Trnava is famous for its walls.

Walking through the old town, your eyes naturally wander towards church towers, historic houses and the remnants of fortifications that have stood here for centuries.

This time, we made a small exception.

Instead of looking at the walls, we looked between them.

And it was worth it.

And finally, a detail that says a lot about hospitality.

Before leaving, we were treated to one last little gesture – a Belgian chocolate praline served on a golden tray.

A small thing? Absolutely. But in hospitality, these are often the details you remember.
